Οι πράκτορες του FBI Τόμας Γκρίερ (Μπρους Γουίλις) και Τζένιφερ Πίτερς (Ράντα Μίτσελ) αναλαμβάνουν να εξιχνιάσουν μια δολοφονία. Είναι η πρώτη φορά μετά από χρόνια που κάποιος δολοφονείται μέσα στην κοινωνία των αντικαταστατών - έναν ιδανικό κόσμο όπου το έγκλημα, ο πόνος και ο φόβος έχουν εκλείψει. Σε αυτή την ουτοπική κοινωνία οι άνθρωποι ζουν τις ζωές τους από απόσταση, από την ασφάλεια του σπιτιού τους, μέσα από ρομποτικούς αντικαταστάτες – σέξι, άψογες μηχανικές αναπαραστάσεις των εαυτών τους. Αναζητώντας τον ένοχο, ο Γκρίερ ανακαλύπτει ότι μια τεράστια συνομωσία κρύβεται πίσω από το φαινόμενο των αντικαταστατών. Και όταν αναγκάζεται να εγκαταλείψει τον προσωπικό του αντικαταστάτη, αποφασίζει να ρισκάρει την ίδια του τη ζωή για να λύσει το μυστήριο.
