Σε μια χρονική περίοδο 20 ετών και σε 2 διαφορετικές ηπείρους, η ταινία περιγράφει την ιστορία της σχέσης δύο φίλων που αλληλογραφούν μεταξύ τους: της Μαίρης, μιας στρουμπουλής, μοναχικής 8χρονης κοπέλας που μένει στα προάστια της Μελβούρνης, στην Αυστραλία, και του Μαξ, ενός παχύσαρκου 44χρονου που πάσχει από το σύνδρομο Asperger και ζει στη χαοτική Νέα Υόρκη. Παρακολουθώντας το ταξίδι της Μαίρη από την εφηβεία στην ενηλικίωση και του Μαξ από την μέση ηλικία στα γηρατειά, βλέπουμε παράλληλα τον δεσμό ανάμεσα στους δύο αυτούς ανθρώπους, που ξεπερνά τα όρια κάθε συνηθισμένης φιλίας.
