Λος αντζελες, κέντρο της πόλης. Μια ομάδα από τρομοκράτες έχουν καταλάβει ένα πολυόροφο κτίριο, έχουν συλλάβει ομήρους και έχουν κηρύξει πόλεμο κατά των πάντων.Ένας μόνο άνθρωπος έχει καταφέρει να ξεφύγει ένας αστυνομικός εκτός υπηρεσίας.Ο Τζων Μακλέην έρχεται στο Λος αντζελες από τη Νέα Υόρκη για να περάσει τα Χριστούγεννα με τη γυναίκα του που εργάζεται εκεί. Κι ενώ την περιμένει στο γραφείο της, γίνεται η επίθεση των τρομοκρατών και η κατάληψη του κτιρίου.Ο Μακλέην οπλισμένος μόνο με το υπηρεσιακό του περίστροφο, και με απίστευτο θάρρος και θράσος, θα ξεκινήσει τον προσωπικό του πόλεμο ενάντια στους τρομοκράτες.
