Η ιστορία εξελίσσετε σε έναν κόσμο διαφορετικό, όσο και ίδιο με τον δικό μας, όπου οι εποχές διαρκούν χρόνια και συχνά δεκαετίες ολόκληρες. Ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας δε δίνει κάποιο συγκεκριμένο όνομα στον κόσμο του.

Ενώ το καλοκαίρι τελειώνει και ο μακρύς χειμώνας βρίσκεται προ των πυλών, ο Ένταρντ Σταρκ ή αλλιώς «Νεντ» (Sean Bean), Aρχοντας του Γουίντερφελ, εγκαταλείπει την αρχαία έδρα του οίκου του έπειτα από επίσκεψη του βασιλιά Ρόμπερτ Μπαράθηον (Mark Addy) και ταξιδεύει στο νότο για να αναλάβει το αξίωμα που θα τον αναδείξει στον δεύτερο ισχυρότερο άνθρωπο του βασιλείου. Σκοπός του είναι να εξιχνιάσει το μυστηριώδη θάνατο του φίλου και προκατόχου του και να αποκαλύψει τη συνωμοσία εναντίον του θρόνου.
