Ο ''Γρήγορος'' Eddie Felson, παλιός μαέστρος του μπιλιάρδου και χαρισματικός απατεώνας, ανακαλύπτει τον Vincent Lauria, ένα νεαρό πολλά υποσχόμενο παίκτη του μπιλιάρδου σε ένα μπαράκι και βλέπει σ' αυτόν τον εαυτό του όπως ήταν νέος. Για να τα καταφέρει ξανά σαν τις παλιές καλές μέρες, προσφέρεται να διδάξει τον Vincent να παίζει με τον παλιό τρόπο των μπιλιαρδόρων που κέρδιζαν χρήματα από τα στοιχήματα ξεγελώντας τους αντιπάλους τους. Μετά από κάποιους δισταγμούς ο Vincent δέχεται και ο Eddie τον παίρνει μαζί με τη φίλη του Carmen σε μια περιοδεία σε όλη τη χώρα για να δουλέψουν στις αίθουσες του μπιλιάρδου. Όμως, η τάση του Vincent να επιδεικνύει το ταλέντο του με αποτέλεσμα να αποθαρρύνει τους πιθανούς αντιπάλους του, δημιουργεί σύντομα μεγάλες εντάσεις ανάμεσα σ' αυτόν και τον Eddie.
