Τρεις Πολωνοί εργάτες φτάνουν για δουλειά στην Αγγλία, έχουν να ανακαινίσουν το σπίτι ενός πλούσιου. Συναντούν τον Νόβακ, Πολωνό αρχιεργάτη που θα γίνει ο επιστάτης τους, και καθώς μόνο αυτός μιλά αγγλικά, η επαφή τους με τον έξω κόσμο. Θα αμειφθούν πολύ καλά και είναι χαρούμενοι.Έχουν διαλέξει όμως λάθος εποχή. Είναι Δεκέμβριος του ?81 και η Πολωνία βυθίζεται σε πολιτικό χάος. Ο στρατός αναλαμβάνει την εξουσία και κηρύσσει τα συνδικάτα εκτός νόμου. Μόνο ο Νόβακ μαθαίνει τα νέα . Αποφασίζει να μην τους πει τίποτα αφού και η δουλειά θα καθυστερούσε και τελικά κανείς τους δεν είναι σε θέση να αντιδράσει τη σχέση τους.Τα Χριστούγεννα έρχονται και η δουλειά συνεχίζεται. Θα τελειώσουν το σπίτι και οι τρεις εργάτες είναι έτοιμοι για την επιστροφή, χαρούμενοι και φορτωμένοι με απαγορευμένα για τη χώρα τους αγαθά. ?ραγε ο Νόβακ θα κρατήσει το μυστικό του κι αυτή την ύστατη στιγμή;
