Στο απώτερο μέλλον, αστυνομικοί και συμμορίες μοτοσικλετιστών συγκρούονται σε απέραντους αυτοκινητόδρομους. Ανάμεσα τους και ο Max Rockatansky ( Mel Gibson ) ο οποίος παραιτείται για να ζήσει με την οικογένεια του. Επιστρέφει όμως στους δρόμους ως τιμωρός……. Μια χαμηλού μπατζετ παραγωγή ( 400.000 δολάρια ) έγινε παγκόσμια επιτυχία χάρις στην ασταμάτητη δράση τις, αλλά και στη διεισδυτικής τις ματιά, ενός πολιτισμένου κόσμου ο οποίος οδεύει προς τη παρακμή. Στο μέλλον η Αυστραλία δείχνεται σαν μια άναρχη – αχανής έρημη χώρα ( μόνο στο μέλλον? ). Η αστυνομία και οι συμμορίες είναι σχεδόν το ίδιο και αυτό, ζουν για τη βία και τη συγκίνηση των δρόμων. Οι μηχανές τους είναι τα μέσα πολέμου και επιβίωσης για αυτούς αλλά και για τους αντιπάλους τους. Είναι μόνο, απλά μεταλλικά τέρατα που διψάνε μόνο για πετρέλαιο.
