Η ζωή του Ben Thomas έχει σημαδευτεί από το ατύχημα που προκάλεσε με το αυτοκίνητό του, αποτέλεσμα του οποίου ήταν ο θάνατος 7 ανθρώπων, συμπεριλαμβανόμενης και της συζύγου του. Στοιχειωμένος από τις τύψεις για το κακό που προκάλεσε ο Ben αποφασίζει να βοηθήσει, επτά άτομα, επανορθώνοντας έτσι για εκείνους που έχασαν τη ζωή τους εξαιτίας του. Στο μυαλό του καταστρώνει ένα σχέδιο, κεντρικό κομμάτι του οποίου είναι ο ίδιος του ο θάνατος. Ξεκινά λοιπόν να αναζητά πληροφορίες για το ποιοι άνθρωποι αξίζουν να βοηθηθούν από τον δικό του θάνατο (π.χ. λαμβάνοντας τα υλικά αγαθά που κατέχει αλλά και τα ίδια του τα όργανα). Στην προσπάθειά του αυτή ο Ben θα εκμεταλλευτεί και την θέση του αδελφού του στην Αμερικάνικη εφορία, με πληροφορίες από τις αχανείς βάσεις δεδομένων της. Στο μεταξύ όμως, γνωρίζει και ερωτεύεται την Emily, ενώ μια δυνατή φιλία θα τον συνδέσει με έναν τυφλό πιανίστα. Έτσι τα σχέδιά του για αυτοκτονία περιπλέκονται φέροντάς τον μπροστά σε σημαντικές αποφάσεις.
