Περί τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 2270 μ.χ. (Stardate: 7410.2) μια μυστηριώδης οντότητα τεραστίου μεγέθους και ισχύος έχει μπει στο γαλαξία μας με πορεία προς τη Γη. Κανείς δεν μπορεί να καταλάβει τι προθέσεις έχει, παρατηρείται όμως ότι η οντότητα αυτή έχει εξαφανίσει ό,τι έχει μπει στο πέρασμά της, χωρίς να μπορεί να εξηγηθεί το γιατί ή να μπορεί να κατανοηθεί η φύση της. Ενώ λοιπόν εκφράζονται φόβοι ακόμη και για την επιβίωση της Γης, ο Ναύαρχος –πλέον- Kirk διατάζεται από τον αστρόστολο να αναλάβει προσωρινώς τη διοίκηση του Enterprise NCC-1701, για να ερευνήσει και να αντιμετωπίσει το φαινόμενο, λόγω της μεγάλης εμπειρίας και του ταλέντου που έχει στην αντιμετώπιση εντελώς νέων και ξένων καταστάσεων. Ο Kirk μαζεύει σιγά σιγά το πλήρωμα που εμπιστεύεται και ξεκινά με το μόλις ανακαινισμένο και τεχνολογικά αναβαθμισμένο Enterprise για να συναντήσει την οντότητα. Η συνέχεια πραγματικά πολύ ωραία
