"Ο Λοχαγός Γουίλαρντ της στρατιωτικής μυστικής υπηρεσίας, επιφορτίζεται με μια αποστολή υψίστης σημασίας: Να ανακαλύψει τον διαβόητο, παράφρονα σχεδόν, Συνταγματάρχη Κουρτς και να τον εξοντώσει...Ο Κούρτς, παρασημοφορημένος ήρωας του Βιετνάμ, κρύβεται κάπου στην Καμπότζη, όπου διεξάγει τον δικό του ""προσωπικό πόλεμο"" με έναν στρατό ιθαγενών.Ο Γουίλαρντ επιβιβάζεται σε ένα ατμόπλοιο και διαπλέει τον ποταμό Μεκόνγκ, με ολιγομελές πλήρωμα. Στη διάρκεια της επικίνδυνης, αιματοβαμμένης διαδρομής τους, παίρνουν μια πικρή γεύση από την παράνοια και τον παραλογισμό που επικρατεί στη ζούγκλα.Εκεί όμως, που ο Γουίλαρντ θα νοιώσει την απόλυτη φρίκη είναι η βάση του Κουρτς, όπου με τρόμο θα ανακαλύψει ότι ο πρώην ήρωας έχει μεταμορφωθεί σε... αιμοσταγή πολέμαρχο του Μεσαίωνα..."
