Ο Ντέξτερ Μόργκαν εργάζεται ως τεχνικός στα αιματολογικά εργαστήρια της αστυνομίας του Μαϊάμι. Είναι ευγενικός, διακριτικός, ετοιμόλογος και σπανίως προκαλεί την προσοχή. Είναι γοητευτικός αλλά αδιαφορεί για το γυναικείο φύλο. Η συνηθισμένη, ενίοτε ανιαρή ζωή του κρύβει ένα σκοτεινό μυστικό: ο Ντέξτερ είναι ένας ψυχοπαθής δολοφόνος. Μια τραυματική παιδική εμπειρία ευθύνεται για τη δημιουργία του απαθούς αυτού κτήνους. Υπό την καθοδήγηση του θετού του πατέρα, ο Ντέξτερ αποφασίζει να προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του στο κοινωνικό σύνολο σκοτώνοντας μόνο εγκληματίες.
Η ήσυχη ζωή του αλλάζει ξαφνικά όταν το Μαϊάμι συγκλονίζεται από τη δράση ενός μανιακού δολοφόνου που φαίνεται να μιμείται τον Ντέξτερ. Ένα τρομακτικό ερώτημα γεννιέται μέσα του. Μήπως τελικά είναι ο ίδιος υπεύθυνος για τα στυγερά εγκλήματα που με τόσο ζήλο προσπαθεί να εξιχνιάσει;
