Είναι η ιστορία ενός διαστημικού ταξιδιού, που αποδεικνύεται ότι είναι ένα ταξίδι στο χρόνο, σε μια αφανισμένη από το πυρηνικό ολοκαύτωμα (μελλοντική) Γη, όπου έχουν αντιστραφεί οι φυσικοί νόμοι της ζωικής εξέλιξης: οι άνθρωποι είναι άλαλα και εξαθλιωμένα άγρια πλάσματα, υποταγμένα στην ανωτερότητα των ευφυών πιθήκων αφεντών τους.Σ? αυτό τον κόσμο του μέλλοντος (που θα μάθουμε στο τέλος μόνο ότι είναι τέτοιος) φθάνουν τρεις Αμερικανοί αστροναύτες, με επικεφαλής τον Τζωρτζ Ταίηλορ, που είναι και ο μόνος που επιβιώνει. Δύο χιμπατζήδες επιστήμονες (η Ζίρα και ο Κορνήλιους) του φέρονται φιλικά και τον χρησιμοποιούν ως πειραματόζωο, στην προσπάθειά τους να ανακαλύψουν τον χαμένο κρίκο της πιθηκοειδούς εξέλιξης, μέχρι που αυτός ανακαλύπτει την τρομακτική αλήθεια.
