Βασισμένη σε αληθινά γεγονότα, η ταινία αναφέρεται στην πιο μεγάλη απόδραση που είχε γίνει ποτέαπό γερμανικό στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης κατά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.Στο πρώτο μέρος της ταινίας μπορούμε να δούμε τις προσπάθειες για να οργανωθείη απόδραση και το μυστικό σκάψιμο ενός τούνελ.Στο υπόλοιπο της ταινίας επικεντρώνεται πλέον στις προσπάθειες της Γερμανικής Γκεστάπονα εντοπίσει τους παραπάνω από 70 φυγάδες, οι οποίοι προσπαθούννα φτάσουν στην Αγγλία ή κάποια άλλη ουδέτερη χώρα.
