Ο μανιωδης αντικομμουνιστης Στρατηγος Jack Ripper, διοικητης μιας αμερικανικης αεροπορικης βασης, αποφασιζει (κατα παραφραση του Clemanceau) οτι ο πολεμος ειναι πολυ σημαντικη υποθεση, για να μεινει στα χερια των πολιτικων και, εκμεταλλευομενος ενα απορρητο σχεδιο επιθεσης με πυρηνικα οπλα εναντιον της Ρωσιας, για το οποιο δεν απαιτειται η προηγουμενη εγκριση του προεδρου των ΗΠΑ, στελνει τα βομβαρδιστικα Β52 της δικαιοδοσιας του με αποστολη να ριξουν το ατομικο οπλισμο τους σε στρατηγικους στοχους της Σοβιετικης Ενωσης, πειθοντας παραλληλα τους αντρες της μοναδας του, οτι οι Ρωσοι εχουν ηδη επιτεθει υπουλα και ο πολεμος μαινεται.

Οι Ρωσοι εντωμεταξυ εχουν εκπονησει και ολοκληρωσει ενα σχεδιο ολοκληρωτικης καταστροφης του πλανητη, σε περιπτωση που θα δεχθουν επιθεση, γεγονος που οι ΗΠΑ αγνοουν, μεχρι τη στιγμη που ενημερωνονται για την επικειμενη επιθεση και προσπαθουν σε συνεννοηση με τον Ρωσο πρωθυπουργο να αναστρεψουν την κατασταση.

Ο μονος που μπορει να βοηθησει στην ανακαλυψη του μυστικου κωδικα ανακλησης των Β52 ειναιο Βρετανος αξιωματικος Lionel Mandrake, προερχομενος απο προγραμμα ανταλλαγης αξιωματικων μεταξυ Αγγλιας και ΗΠΑ, δευτερος τη ταξει στη μοναδα του στρατηγου Ripper.

Κεντρικο προσωπο της ιστοριας και ο Ταγματαρχης Kong, κυβερνητης ενος απο τα Β52, που αγνοωντας την πραγματικοτητα, προσπαθει με αυτοθυσια να ριξει τις πυρηνικες βομβες που μεταφερει το αεροσκαφος του στους στοχους που του εχουν δοθει.

Ο πρωην ΝΑΖΙ και νυν ειδικος συμβουλος επι θεματων πυρηνικου εξοπλισμου των ΗΠΑ, Dr.Strangelove, καλειται να δωσει την υστατη λυση...
