Ο Γουόλτερ είναι ένας απλός οικογενειάρχης που ζει ήσυχα σε ένα διαμέρισμα πλάι στη γυναίκα του. Όλα θα αλλάξουν όμως όταν αποκτήσει ένα βιβλίο με τίτλο «No 23», καθώς οι σελίδες του θα τον οδηγήσουν σε έναν κόσμο παράνοιας και εμμονών. Ο αριθμός 23 καταλήγει να τον «στοιχειώσει», την ώρα που ανακαλύπτει πως ήρωας του μυθιστορήματος δεν είναι άλλος από τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό και πως σύντομα θα γίνει μάρτυρας ενός φόνου
