Καλοκαίρι στην Αγγλία του 1983, της Θάτσερ, του πολέμου των Φόκλαντ και της υψηλής ανεργίας. Ο Σον, δωδεκάχρονο παιδί μιας φτωχής οικογένειας που έχει χάσει τον πατέρα του στον πόλεμο, τριγυρνάει στο Γιορκσάιρ χωρίς φίλους και διωγμένος από το σχολείο του. Εύκολη λεία για την τοπική συμμορία των σκίνχεντ, δηλαδή, η οποία θα τον κάνει να νιώσει ότι επιτέλους ανήκει κάπου. ?ψογος γνώστης της εποχής και της κοινωνικής τάξης που απεικονίζει, ο Σέιν Μέντοους αποφεύγει να κριτικάρει το νεαρό και αδύναμο ήρωά του, προτιμώντας να εντάξει την προσωπική του ιστορία στο γενικότερο πλαίσιο πολιτικών ταραχών και διαμόρφωσης μιας νέας ποπ κουλτούρας.
