Ο Τζάγκουαρ Πόου είναι ένας συνηθισμένος νεαρός άνδρας που ζει στο ειδυλλιακό χωριό του μέσα στη ζούγκλα της Λατινικής Αμερικής όπου κατοικούν κυνηγοί. Η εποχή είναι οι αρχές του 16ου αιώνα, λίγο πριν φτάσουν οι Ισπανοί στην περιοχή. Μια περιοχή που ανήκει στο βασίλειο των Μάγια, δημιουργοί ενός από τους σημαντικότερους πολιτισμούς του κόσμου.Ο Τζάγκουαρ Πόου είναι παντρεμένος, έχει ένα παιδί και η γυναίκα του είναι έτοιμη να γεννήσει δεύτερο. Την ηρεμία του, όμως, έρχεται να διασαλεύσει ένα βίαιο γεγονός. Στο χωριό του εισβάλλουν Μάγια από την πρωτεύουσα. Λεηλατούν, βιάζουν, σφάζουν και πιάνουν αιχμαλώτους, μεταξύ των οποίων και τον Τζάγκουαρ Πόου.Εκείνος, λίγο πριν πιαστεί, «θάβει» την έγκυο γυναίκα του και το παιδί του σε μια τρύπα μέσα στο έδαφος για να μην τους βρουν και υπόσχεται πως θα επιστρέψει. Αφού δει να σκοτώνουν τον πατέρα του μπροστά στα μάτια του, καταλαβαίνει πως πλησ...
