Το How I Met Your Mother είναι μια κωμωδία που ασχολείται με τη ζωή του Τεντ (Josh Radnor) και πως ερωτεύτηκε τη μητέρα των παιδιών του. Όλα αρχίζουν όταν ο καλύτερος φίλος του Τεντ, ο Μάρσαλ (Jason Segal), κατέπληξε τους πάντες λέγοντας ότι θα παντρευτεί την καπέλα του που είναι μαζί για πολύ καιρό, την Lily (Alyson Hannigan), μια δασκάλα στο νηπιαγωγείο. Τότε ο Τεντ συνειδητοποιεί ότι θα πρέπει να κάνει κάτι αν κι αυτός θέλει να βρει την πραγματική αγάπη. Σ’ αυτή του την αναζήτηση τον βοηθάει ο Μπάρνεϊ (Neil Patrick Harris), ένας φίλος με ατελείωτες, κάποιες φορές εξωφρενικές, απόψεις, με εμμονή στο να φορά κοστούμια και ένας σίγουρος τρόπος να γνωρίσεις γυναίκες. Όταν ο Τεντ γνωρίζει την Ρόμπιν (Cobie Smulders), είναι σίγουρος ότι την ερωτεύτηκε με την πρώτη ματιά, αλλά η μοίρα ίσως έχει κάτι άλλο στο νου. Η σειρά ξεδιπλώνεται μέσα από φλάσμπακ από το μέλλον με τη φωνή του Μπομπ Σάγκετ.
