Ο Μάικ Ένσλιν είναι συγγραφέας. Ξεκίνησε με φόρα, κατακτώντας δύσκολο κοινό και κριτικούς με το πρώτο του βιβλίο, όμως, ο θάνατος της κόρης του από ανίατη ασθένεια τον τσάκισε. Πήρε διαζύγιο και μετατράπηκε σε κυνικό, ενώ άλλαξε και λογοτεχνική ρότα. Καθώς πιστεύει μόνο σε ό,τι βλέπει με τα ίδια του τα μάτια, έχει γράψει μια σειρά από μπεστ σέλερς όπου αμφισβητεί την εμφάνιση μεταφυσικών φαινομένων στα πιο γνωστά στοιχειωμένα σπίτια και νεκροταφεία των ΗΠΑ. Ετοιμάζοντας το βιβλίο «Δέκα Νύχτες σε Στοιχειωμένα Δωμάτια Ξενοδοχείων», αποφασίζει να μείνει στη σουίτα 1408 ενός ξενοδοχείου στη Νέα Υόρκη. Ο διευθυντής του ξενοδοχείου προσπαθεί να τον αποτρέψει: όσοι πελάτες έμειναν στο συγκεκριμένο δωμάτιο, δεν άντεξαν ζωντανοί πάνω από μία ώρα! Δεν μπορεί, όμως, να πείσει τον Μάικ, ο οποίος τελικά μπαίνει στο δωμάτιο. Η διαμονή στο 1408 αναγκάζει τον Ένσλιν να αναθεωρήσει όλα όσα πίστευε και...
