Η σειρά αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός ιππότη πολεμιστή υπό την ηγεσία του King Edward III. Κατεστραμμένος από τη φθορά του πολέμου και τους όρκους να αφήσει κάτω το σπαθί του, η βία τον τραβάει πάλι πίσω και τον αναγκάζει να σηκώσει το πιο αιματηρό όλων. H ιστορία επικεντρώνεται στον Wilken Brattle, που κάποτε υπηρετούσε τον βασιλιά, αλλά αποσύρθηκε για να ακολουθήσει μια ειρηνική ζωή. Όταν όμως οι διαμάχες αρχίσουν να φουντώνουν, ο Brattle θα αναγκαστεί να ξαναπιάσει το σπαθί του για να προστατέψει τον εαυτό του και την οικογένειά του.
