Ο βραβευμένος με Oscar ερμηνείας για το «The Fugitive» Tommy Lee Jones κάνει το σκηνοθετικό του ντεμπούτο στην μεγάλη οθόνη με ένα σύγχρονο γουέστερν. Η ταινία που έφυγε από τις Καννες με τα βραβεία ανδρικής ερμηνείας και σεναρίου, διηγείται την προσπάθεια του καουμπόι Pete (Tommy Lee Jones) να πάρει εκδίκηση για τον άδικο θάνατο του παράνομου μετανάστη φίλου του Melquiades (Julio Cesar Cedillo). Τον Melquiades πυροβόλησε κατα λάθος ο νεαρός συνοριοφύλακας Mike (Barry Pepper) εν ώρα υπηρεσίας και έτσι οι τοπικές αρχές συγκαλύπτουν την υπόθεση. Ο Pete έχει ως μοναδικό σκοπό να εκπληρώσει την υπόσχεση που είχε δώσει στον νεκρό φίλο του και να τον θάψει στην γεννέτειρά του στο Μεξικό. Για συνοδοιπόρο σε αυτό του το ταξίδι 'επιλέγει' τον δολοφόνο του Melquiades, τον Mike τον οποίο και υπό την απειλή όπλου αναγκάζει να τον ακολουθήσει. Το ταξίδι τους ανάμεσα στα αφιλόξενα και απόκρυμνα βου...
