480 π.Χ. Ο βασιλιάς της Περσίας, Ξέρξης, ζητά «γη και ύδωρ» ως ένδειξη υποταγής από την Σπάρτη, την μόνη ελληνική πόλη ? κράτος που θεωρεί ότι θα προσπαθήσει να μπει εμπόδιο στα επεκτατικά του σχέδια. Έχει δίκιο: ο απεσταλμένος του ρίχνεται σε βαθύ πηγάδι, προκειμένου να? βρει και τα δύο σε αφθονία! Ο βασιλιάς της Σπάρτης, Λεωνίδας, δεν θέλει να περιμένει: επιθυμεί να σταματήσει τον Ξέρξη πριν φτάσει στην Σπάρτη. Όμως, του βάζουν εμπόδια τόσο το ιερατείο όσο και οι πολιτικοί της πόλης ? ο Ξέρξης έχει φροντίσει να τους? δώσει το κατιτίς τους σε χρήματα! Ο Λεωνίδας μαζεύει 300 εθελοντές και με το τέχνασμα ότι είναι η? προσωπική του φρουρά και πως θέλει να? ξεμουδιάσει λιγάκι, οδεύει προς τις Θερμοπύλες. Για να φτάσει ο στρατός του Ξέρξη στην Σπάρτη θα πρέπει πρώτα να περάσει από το συγκεκριμένο στενό ανάμεσα σε στεριά και θάλασσα στην Θεσσαλία. Όσο ο Λεωνίδας βαδίζει προς τις Θερμοπύλες...
