Στα ερείπια ενός εγκαταλελειμμένου μοναστηριού στα Καρπάθια, ομάδα επιστημόνων ανακαλύπτει την είσοδο σε μια τεράστια σπηλιά, που πιστεύεται ότι αποτελεί ένα ιδιόρρυθμο οικοσύστημα, αποκομμένο τελείως από τον έξω κόσμο. Καλείται λοιπόν από την Αμερική ομάδα ειδικών σπηλαιοκαταδυτών για να εξερευνηθεί αυτή η σπηλιά, η οποία φαίνεται να εκτείνεται πολλά χιλιόμετρα κάτω από τη γη αλλά και να κρύβει πολλά θανάσιμα μυστικά. Γρήγορα η ομάδα διαπιστώνει ότι υπήρχαν και άλλοι εκτός από θρησκευτικούς λόγους για να χτιστεί το μοναστήρι στην είσοδο αυτής της μυστηριώδους σπηλιάς.
