Ο χρηματιστής Μαξ Σκίνερ είναι παραδομένος στο κυνήγι του χρήματος. Είναι πολύ καλός στη δουλειά του και δεν έχει ηθικούς ενδοιασμούς: προκειμένου να «κερδίσει» δεν λογαριάζει τίποτα... Ζει μόνος του στο Λονδίνο και πέρα από τη δουλειά του δεν φαίνεται να τον νοιάζει τίποτε άλλο.Έχει έναν θείο στη Νότια Γαλλία, ο οποίος διαθέτει έναν τεράστιο αμπελώνα και παρασκευάζει κρασί. Όταν ο συγκεκριμένος θείος πεθαίνει, ο Μαξ, ως ο πιο κοντινός συγγενής, είναι ο νόμιμος κληρονόμος της περιουσίας του. Αποφασίζει να πάει στη Νότια Γαλλία, να τακτοποιήσει τις εκκρεμείς υποθέσεις και να πουλήσει το κτήμα: για αυτόν, αποτελεί απλά άλλη μια πηγή κέρδους.Όμως, τα πράγματα δεν πάνε έτσι όπως τα υπολόγιζε. Καταρχάς, θα συναντήσει δυσκολίες από την τοπική κοινωνία. Κατά δεύτερον, αργά αλλά σταθερά, θα του έρχονται θύμισες από περασμένα καλοκαίρια, όταν ήταν πιτσιρικάς και πέρναγε τις διακοπές του στο συ...
