Ο Τομ Στολ μένει στην ήσυχη πόλη του Μίλμπρουκ, μαζί με την γυναίκα του και τα δύο τους παιδιά. Πρόκειται για μια τυπική, αμερικάνικη οικογένεια, χωρίς σοβαρά προβλήματα. Ένα βράδυ ο Τομ δέχεται επίθεση από δύο εγκληματίες μέσα στο εστιατόριό του, που έχουν κατά νου τη ληστεία και το βιασμό. Τους αφοπλίζει και τους... σκοτώνει! Έτσι, μετατρέπεται σε «ήρωα» της μικρής, επαρχιακής πόλης. Τα media ρίχνουν τους φακούς της δημοσιότητας επάνω στον Τομ. Την επόμενη ημέρα τον επισκέπτεται ένας μυστηριώδης άντρας ο οποίος επιμένει ότι ο Τομ δεν είναι αυτός που λέει. Υποστηρίζει πως το πραγματικό του όνομα είναι Τζόι Κιούζακ και πως παλιότερα δούλευε ως πληρωμένος δολοφόνος στη Φιλαδέλφεια! Πρόκειται για σύμπτωση, για παρανόηση ή μήπως συμβαίνει κάτι άλλο?
