Ιαπωνία, 1929. Μια φτωχή οικογένεια πουλάει τις δύο ανήλικες κόρες της, την Τσίγιο και την Σάτσου, παραχωρώντας τες στο σπίτι μιας γκέισας.Εκεί, η μικρή Τσίγιο δεν θα αργήσει να γευτεί τη σκληρότητα των γύρω της, εξαιτίας της ομορφιάς και της εξυπνάδας της, προσόντα που προκαλούν τη ζήλια. Κύριος αντίπαλός της είναι γκέισα Χατσουμόμο, η πιο επιτυχημένη γκέισα του συγκεκριμένου «σπιτιού», που βλέπει στο πρόσωπο της Τσίγιο μια μελλοντική αντίπαλο.Η Τσίγιο το μόνο που θέλει είναι να βρει την αδελφή της, Σάτσου, με την οποία χωρίστηκαν. Η Χατσουμόμο θα βάλει εμπόδια στην προσπάθειά της να γίνει γκέισα κι έτσι η Τσίγιο θα γίνει υπηρέτρια στο συγκεκριμένο σπίτι.Ευτυχώς για την Τσίγιο, όταν μία άλλη γκέισα, η Μεμεχά, βρεθεί στο δρόμο της και αναγνωρίσει τα προσόντα της, την «αγοράζει» και τη μεταφέρει στο δικό της σπίτι. Εκεί, υπό την καθοδήγηση της Μεμεχά, η Τσίγιο θα μετονομαστεί σε Σαγιού...
