Ο Ντέιβιντ Μακ Λάρεν είναι ένας γεωλόγος ο οποίος επιθυμεί να βρεθεί σε μια δύσβατη περιοχή της Ανταρκτικής, προκειμένου να βρει έναν σπάνιο μετεωρίτη. Ο μόνος τρόπος για να προσεγγιστεί η περιοχή είναι μέσω ελκήθρων.Έτσι, ο Τζέρι Σέφερντ, οδηγός του National Science Foundation, μαζί με τα 8 σκυλιά του (6 Χάσκι και 2 Μάλαμουτ), θα προσπαθήσει (για άλλη μια φορά) να επιτελέσει την εργασία του.Όμως, η αποστολή θα διακοπεί βίαια όταν την περιοχή θα «χτυπήσει» μια εξαιρετικά βίαιη καταιγίδα. Ο Τζέρι μαζί με τον Ντέιβιντ - που τραυματίζεται άσχημα και σώζεται μετά από την επέμβαση των σκυλιών - θα αναγκαστούν να γυρίσουν στη βάση και να την εκκενώσουν, αφήνοντας τα 8 σκυλιά ξοπίσω τους.Σκυλιά που καλούνται να επιβιώσουν μόνα τους για έξι ολόκληρους μήνες, έχοντας να αντιμετωπίσουν την έλλειψη τροφής, το πολικό ψύχος και εχθρικά ζώα...
