Μεταφορά της διαχρονικής κωμωδίας του Ουίλλιαμ Σαίξπηρ. Η υπόθεση διαδραματίζεται στη Βενετία του 16ου αιώνα. Ο Αντώνιο (Τζ. ?ιρονς) δανείζεται χρήματα από τον Σάυλοκ (Αλ Πατσίνο) για να βοηθήσει τον νεαρό και απένταρο φίλο του Βασσάνη (Τζ. Φάινς) να παντρευτεί την όμορφη Πόρσια (Κόλλινς). Πικραμένος από τις προσβολές του Αντόνιο,ο Σάυλοκ θέτει πολύ συγκεκριμένους όρους, σε περίπτωση που δεν πληρώσει το δάνειο. Κι ενώ οι ναυτιλιακές επιχειρήσεις του Αντόνιο καταστρέφονται από τις θύελλες, η οργή του Σάυλοκ αυξάνεται, καθώς η κόρη του απάγεται από τον εραστή της, Λορέντζο (Κοξ). Η προθεσμία υποβολής του χρηματικού δανείου λήγει. Ο Σάυλοκ διεκδικεί το ενέχυρο του, μια λίβρα από τη σάρκα του Αντόνιο.
