Στο όχι και τόσο κοντινό μέλλον η γη δεν έχει πλέον χώρο για όλους και μόνη λύση είναι ο εποικισμός άλλων γαλαξιών. «Εμφύλιος» ξεσπά ανάμεσα στη συμμαχία που προσπαθεί να δημιουργήσει έναν καλύτερο κόσμο με μάλλον δικτατορικά μέσα και στους επαναστάτες, οι οποίοι επιζητούν την ελευθερία της σκέψης. Οι καλοί χάνουν και μόνο μερικοί έχουν απομείνει να εναντιώνονται στην κυριαρχία της συμμαχίας. Ανάμεσά τους το πλήρωμα του Serenity, το οποίο για να επιβιώσει καταφεύγει σε κλοπές και μικροεγκλήματα, που φυσικά ως στόχο έχουν να πλήξουν τους ισχυρούς και δυνατούς και να βοηθήσουν τους αδύνατους. Μεταξύ των μελών του πληρώματος βρίσκεται και η River, ένα χαρισματικό, αλλά και επικίνδυνο κορίτσι, που μπορεί να αλλάξει την πορεία της Ιστορίας.
