Οι Βρετανοί Joe Simpson και Simon Yates ήταν οι πρώτοι ορειβάτες που δοκίμασαν να κατακτήσουν την κορυφή αναρριχόμενοι την δυτική πλευρά της 'siula GrandeΑ στις περουβιανές Ανδεις το 1985. Αν και ικανότατοι ορειβάτες, στην προσπάθειά τους, ο Simpson τραυματίστηκε πέφτοντας από ένα μικρό ύψος και σπάζοντας το πόδι του. Η ανύψωση του τραυματία δεν θα είχε κάποιο όφελος καθώς δεν είχε τη δύναμη να στηριχτεί στα απότομα βράχια. Μετά από ένα νέο κακό χειρισμό του Yates, ο Simpson έπεσε ακόμα περισσότερο και μοναδική λύση ήταν να κόψουν το σχοινί που τους ένωνε, για να μην καταλήξουν και οι δύο στο βάθος του γκρεμού. Τίποτε δεν έδειχνε πως ο Simpson θα μπορούσε να επιβιώσει από την πτώση. Κι όμως, κατάφερε να σωθεί και να καταγράψει την περιπέτειά του στο βιβλίο Touching The Void.
