Βρετανία, Μεσαίωνας. Ο Βασιλιάς Ντόντσαντ της Ιρλανδίας εισβάλλει στην Αγγλία. Σε μία από τις εισβολές, ο Λόρδος Μάρκε της Κορνουάλης σώζει τον ορφανό Τριστάνο. Το αγόρι μεγαλώνει στο πλευρό του ηγέτη και αναθρέφεται σε έναν από τους ικανότερους πολεμιστές της Κορνουάλης. Δέκα χρόνια αργότερα, ο Λόρδος Μάρκε οραματίζεται να ενώσει όλα τα αγγλικά φύλα ενάντια στους Ιρλανδούς. Αρχηγός των πολεμιστών του, ο ιππότης Τριστάνος ηγείται της επίθεσης στην Ιρλανδία, φέρνει τη νίκη, τραυματίζεται όμως θανάσιμα. Οι σύντροφοι παραδίδουν τον ήρωα στη φλεγόμενη, νεκρική βάρκα. Το τέλος, όμως, δεν γράφεται εδώ για τον Τριστάνο. Στις όχθες της Ιρλανδίας, μία μυστηριώδης κοπέλα ανακαλύπτει το άθικτο σώμα του και το επαναφέρει στη ζωή. Χωρίς ταυτότητες, οι δύο νεαροί ερωτεύονται και χωρίζουν. Ο Τριστάνος θα επιστρέψει στην Ιρλανδία για να διεκδικήσει την Ιζόλδη, κόρη του Βασιλιά Ντόντσαντ, σε έναν αγώνα μονομάχων. Αν κερδίσει, θα ανταμείψει με μία σύζυγο τον άνδρα που του στάθηκε σαν πατέρας. Μόνο που η γυναίκα που τώρα προσφέρει στον Λόρδο Μάρκε είναι η άγνωστη με την οποία είχε κάποτε σμίξει.
