Ο έμπειρος ασφαλιστής Γουόλτερ Νεφ συνάπτει παράνομη ερωτική σχέση με την Φίλις, σύζυγο ενός πελάτη του. Η Φίλις θα του προτείνει να δολοφονήσει τον άντρα της και μαζί να εισπράξουν την αποζημίωση της ασφάλειας ζωής. Ο Νεφ όχι μονάχα συμφωνεί, αλλά αναζητά τρόπους να κάνει την αποζημίωση διπλή.
