Τα περισσότερα βράδια στο σπιτικό των Bucket, το δείπνο είναι μία νερωμένη σούπα από λάχανο, την οποία όμως ο νεαρός Charlie με μεγάλη χαρά μοιράζεται μαζί με τη μητέρα του, τον πατέρα του και τους τέσσερις παππούδες και γιαγιάδες του. Κάθε βράδυ, το τελευταίο πράγμα που ο Charlie βλέπει από το παράθυρό του είναι το επιβλητικό εργοστάσιο σοκολάτας. Για σχεδόν δεκαπέντε χρόνια, κανένας δεν έχει δει ούτε έναν εργάτη να μπαίνει ή να βγαίνει από το εργοστάσιο, ούτε κανένας είδε ποτέ του τον ίδιο τον ιδιοκτήτη Willy Wonka. Κι όμως κατά ένα μυστηριώδη τρόπο, ακόμη κατασκευάζονται μεγάλες ποσότητες σοκολάτας, οι οποίες αποστέλλονται σε όλο τον κόσμο. Απρόσμενα ένα πρωί, ο Willy Wonka θα κάνει μια απίστευτη ανακοίνωση. Προτίθεται να ανοίξει τις πόρτες του διάσημου εργοστάσίου του και να αποκαλύψει «όλα τα μυστικά και τη μαγεία της σοκολάτας» σε πέντε τυχερά παιδιά. Εκείνα τα παιδιά που θα βρουν τα πέντε χρυσά εισιτήρια που έχει κρύψει σε πέντε σοκολάτες. Για τον Charlie αυτό θα ήταν η μεγαλύτερη ευτυχία, όμως οι πιθανότητες είναι πολύ μικρές, αφού παίρνει μόνο μία σοκολάτα το χρόνο, ως δώρο για τα γενέθλιά του.
