Ο Ματ Σκάντερ, ένας πρώην αστυνόμος, εργάζεται ως ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ και κινείται παράλληλα με τον νόμο. Στο γραφείο του μπαίνει ένας έμπορος ηρωίνης και τον πείθει να αναλάβει την περίπτωση του, που αφορά την ανεύρεση αυτών που απήγαγαν και δολοφόνησαν τη σύζυγο του. Το πρώτο που ανακαλύπτει ο Σκάντερ είναι πως οι άνθρωποι αυτοί δεν προέβησαν στο ίδιο διεστραμμένο έγκλημα για πρώτη φορά, αλλά ούτε φαίνεται να είναι και η τελευταία τους. Η έρευνα θα τον φέρει στα σοκάκια της Νέας Υόρκης και ο χρόνος κυλάει αντίστροφα πριν οι εγκληματίες ξαναχτυπήσουν.
