O Τρέβορ Ρέζνικ είναι μηχανουργός. Χειρίζεται βαριά μηχανήματα - μια δουλειά επικίνδυνη, που θέλει προσοχή και διαύγεια. Η κατάσταση του Τρέβορ επιδεινώνει το ρίσκο: πάσχει από αϋπνία - δεν έχει κλείσει μάτι για πάνω από ένα χρόνο. Καθώς δεν έχει το θάρρος να εξομολογηθεί την κατάστασή του σε κανένα, κουβαλά το πρόβλημά του σαν ένα σκοτεινό, εξευτελιστικό μυστικό. Όταν εμφανίζεται ο Ιβάν, ένας καινούργιος συνάδελφος, ο Τρέβορ αισθάνεται ένα κακό προαίσθημα. Καμιά φορά οι εφιάλτες ζωντανεύουν όταν έχεις τα μάτια ανοιχτά. Ένας αγνώριστα αδυνατισμένος, «άυπνος» Κρίστιαν Μπέιλ, σε μία παραισθησιακή ερμηνεία.
