Ο Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) είναι ένας «reverse μηχανικός», ουσιαστικά δηλαδή κλέβει τις τεχνολογίες άλλων προϊόντων και τις βελτιώνει. Μετά από διάφορες μικροδουλειές, ο James Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart) του κάνει την πιο συμφέρουσα πρόταση της ζωής του: Τρία χρόνια δουλειά σε ένα μυστικό Project της εταιρίας του, σε αντάλλαγμα με μια περιουσία… με έναν όρο. Στο τέλος της δουλειάς, οι μνήμες του Jennings από αυτά τα 3 χρόνια θα σβηστούν για να εξασφαλιστεί το απόρρητο. Το μυστήριο αρχίζει όταν ο Jennings συνειδητοποιεί ότι στην περίοδο που δεν θυμάται, έχει ανταλλάξει τα χρήματα με έναν μυστηριώδη φάκελο, που περιέχει 20 απλά αντικείμενα.
