Μια γυναίκα που χάνει τη μνήμη της απολαμβάνει να ακούει ξανά και ξανά την ιστορία δύο ερωτευμένων, όπως έχει καταγραφεί στο ημερολόγιό τους. Ζώντας τη δεκαετία του 1940 σε μια παραθαλάσσια πόλη της Βόρειας Καρολίνας, ο Noah και η Allie ζουν ένα παθιασμένο καλοκαιρινό έρωτα αν και προέρχονται από διαφορετικές κοινωνικές τάξεις. Ο δεύτερος Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος θα τους χωρίσει και θα περάσουν πολλά χρόνια για να ξανασυναντηθούν. Στο μεταξύ η Allie έχει γνωρίσει τον νεαρό στρατιώτη Lon, με τον οποίο σχεδιάζουν να παντρευτούν. Όταν εκείνη θα διαβάσει στην εφημερίδα μια είδηση για τον Noah, θα ανησυχήσει και θα τον αναζητήσει στο σπίτι του. Με το πρώτο τους βλέμμα μετά από χρόνια οι δύο νέοι θα καταλάβουν ότι εκείνος ο καλοκαιρινός έρωτας δεν έχει σβήσει ακόμα...
