Ο Μπαλιάν είναι ένας σιδεράς που έχει χάσει την οικογένειά του και σχεδόν την πίστη του. Οι θρησκευτικοί πόλεμοι στους ?γιους Τόπους φαίνονται πολύ απόμακροι στα μάτια του, ωστόσο ελκύεται από αυτούς, Με φόντο τις ίντριγκες της μεσαιωνικής Ιερουσαλήμ ερωτεύεται, γίνεται ηγέτης και τελικά χρησιμοποιεί όλο του το θάρρος και την επιδεξιότητα για να υπερασπιστεί την πόλη ενάντια στους εχθρούς της.Η μοίρα κυνηγάει και ανακαλύπτει τον Μπαλιάν στο πρόσωπο ενός σπουδαίου ιππότη, του Γοδεφρείγου του Ιμπελέν, έναν σταυροφόρο που επιστρέφει για λίγο καιρό στην πατρίδα του τη Γαλλία από τους πόλεμους στη Μέση Ανατολή. Ομολογεί ότι είναι πατέρας του Μπαλιάν και του αποκαλύπτει το πραγματικό νόημα της ιπποσύνης, παίρνοντάς τον σε ένα ταξίδι διαμέσου των ηπείρων στην ένδοξη Ιερή Πόλη.Στην Ιερουσαλήμ της εποχής εκείνης -μεταξύ Δεύτερης και Τρίτης Σταυροφορίας- επικρατεί μια εύθραυστη ειρήνη, μετά από...
