Η γιατρός Lena Kendricks είναι μέλος των «Γιατρών Χωρίς Σύνορα» σε μια αποστολή στην Αφρική. Φροντίζει τα θύματα του εμφυλίου πολέμου στις εγκαταστάσεις μιας ιεραποστολής σε ένα απομακρυσμένο χωριό, στη ζούγκλα της Νιγηρίας. Σύντομα όμως μια κρίση θα ταράξει τη χώρα όταν ένας αδίστακτος δικτάτορας ανατρέπει τη δημοκρατική κυβέρνηση της χώρας. Για να σώσει την Αμερικανίδα γιατρό μεταβαίνει στη Νιγηρία ο υπολοχαγός A.K. Waters με αποστολή να τη βγάλει από τη χώρα. Εκείνη, όμως, αρνείται να φύγει, αν δεν σωθούν μαζί της και οι κάτοικοι του χωριού, που διαφορετικά είναι καταδικασμένοι. Ο βετεράνος Waters και η επίλεκτη ομάδα του πρέπει τώρα να διαλέξουν ανάμεσα στο καθήκον και την ανθρωπιά τους. Οι επιλογές είναι συγκεκριμένες: ή θα αδιαφορήσουν για τους πολίτες υπακούοντας στις διαταγές τους ή θα βρουν το κουράγιο να υπακούσουν στη συνείδησή τους.
