Η τραγωδία που λαμβάνει χώρα το 1989 στο διχασμένο Βερολίνο, πιο συγκεκριμένα στο Ανατολικό, και κατ’ επέκταση στη διχασμένη χώρα σε Ανατολική και Δυτική Γερμανία, έχει ως εξής. Μία μητέρα δύο παιδιών, που εγκαταλείπει ο σύζυγος για να πάει στην μη σοσιαλιστική «δύση», ηρωική σοσιαλίστρια και υποστηρίκτρια του καθεστώτος της Ανατολικής Γερμανίας, παθαίνει καρδιακό επεισόδιο και πέφτει σε κώμα όταν βλέπει τον γιο της σε διαδήλωση. Όταν ξυπνάει από το κώμα αρκετούς μήνες αργότερα πολλά έχουν αλλάξει. Και το κυριότερο... έχει πέσει το τείχος. Τίποτα δεν είναι πια ίδιο! Και το τελευταίο πράγμα που θέλει ο γιος της είναι ένα δεύτερο καρδιακό επεισόδιο, που πιθανόν να υποστεί η μητέρα του αν αντιληφθεί ότι ο κόσμος της γκρεμίστηκε μαζί με το τείχος. Μόνη λύτρωση η δημιουργία ενός ψεύτικου κόσμου 79 τετραγωνικών μέσα σε έναν παγκόσμιο και τρομακτικά αληθινό.
