Η Εκκαθάριση είναι μια νύχτα που όλα τα εγκλήματα είναι νόμιμα και όλα τα νοσοκομεία, οι πυροσβεστικοί σταθμοί και τα αστυνομικά τμήματα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες είναι κλειστά για 12 ώρες.
Ένα ζευγάρι, ο Shane και η Liz πηγαίνουν με το αυτοκίνητο στο σπίτι με τα παιδιά τους, όταν αυτό μένει από φυσικό αέριο, ακριβώς την ώρα που ξεκινά η Εκκαθάριση.
Εν τω μεταξύ, ένας άλλος χαρακτήρας, ο Leo, ζητά να πάρει εκδίκηση για τον άνθρωπο που σκότωσε το γιο του και μια μητέρα με τη κόρη της, η Εύα και η Κάλι εγκαταλείπουν το σπίτι τους καθώς κάποιοι βάνδαλοι το καταστρέφουν.
Οι πέντε αυτοί άνθρωποι συναντιούνται και προσπαθούν να επιβιώσουν αυτή τη νύχτα στο Λος Άντζελες...
