Ο Ίαν Γκρέι, που σπουδάζει μοριακή βιολογία με εξειδίκευση στην εξέλιξη του ματιού, αφήνει το εργαστήριο για να πάει σε πάρτι. Εκεί έχει μια έντονη επαφή με ένα μυστηριώδες μοντέλο με μάσκα, που δραπετεύει μέσα στη νύχτα. Με μόνη εικόνα τα εκθαμβωτικά της μάτια, την αναζητά και οι δύο τους ερωτεύονται. Οι ιδεολογικές τους διαφορές αρχικά φαίνεται να τρέφουν τη σχέση και οι δυο τους ορκίζονται να περάσουν μια ζωή μαζί. Χρόνια αργότερα, ο Ίαν και η βοηθός του, Κάρεν, κάνουν μια επαναστατική ανακάλυψη με απίστευτες συνέπειες στην κοινωνία όπως τη γνωρίζουμε. Τώρα, ο Ίαν πρέπει να αφήσει τα πάντα πίσω και να ταξιδεύει ανά τον πλανήτη να βρει την αλήθεια πίσω από την ανακάλυψη του και τι μπορεί αυτή να σημαίνει.
