Ο Σαρλό εργαζεται σε ένα εργοστάσιο με μηχανές, όπου προσπαθεί μανιωδως να κρατηθεί στο γρήγορο ρυθμό τους. Τον επιλέγουν να συμμετέχει σε ένα πείραμα με ένα αυτοτροφοδοτούμενο μηχάνημα. Εκεί όμως του συμβαίνουν διάφορες αναποδιές, που οδηγούν το αφεντικό του στο συμπέρασμα ότι έχει τρελαθεί! Έτσι ο Σαρλό καταλήγει σε ψυχιατρικό ίδρυμα και όταν βγαίνει από εκεί, οδηγείται στη φυλακή - επειδή παρεξηγείται για κομμουνιστής - αλλά αποφυλακίζεται χαριστικά αφού καταφέρνει να αποτρέψει μια εξέγερση...
