Σοβιετική Ένωση 1961. Παρά τις αντιρρήσεις του πλοιάρχου Πολένιν, το Κρεμλίνο αποφασίζει την καθέλκυση του πρώτου πυρηνικού σοβιετικού υποβρυχίου. Όμως, κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού παρουσιάζεται βλάβη στον πυρηνικό αντιδραστήρα, γεγονός που θέτει σε κίνδυνο τόσο τη ζωή των ανδρών του πληρώματος όσο και την παγκόσμια ειρήνη.
