«Όταν η πτήση 753 από το Βερολίνο προσγειώνεται σύμφωνα με το πρόγραμμα στο αεροδρόμιο JFK της Νέας Υόρκης, κανένας δεν μπορεί να φανταστεί τη φρίκη που προμηνύεται. Η κατάρρευση των συστημάτων επικοινωνίας του υπερσύγχρονου Μπόινγκ σημαίνει συναγερμό στον πύργο ελέγχου, ενώ οι θύρες του αεροσκάφους παραμένουν ερμητικά κλειστές. Όλοι οι επιβαίνοντες φαίνεται να είναι νεκροί, χωρίς εμφανή τραύματα, και οι επιδημιολόγοι του Κέντρου Ελέγχου Νοσημάτων καλούνται να διαπιστώσουν τι συνέβη. Προς μεγάλη τους ανακούφιση, ανακαλύπτουν τέσσερις επιζώντες, που όμως δε θυμούνται τίποτα. Ένα εβένινο κιβώτιο γεμάτο χώμα που βρίσκεται μυστηριωδώς στο φορτίο του αεροπλάνου, για να εξαφανιστεί αργότερα ως διά μαγείας, όπως και η παράξενη οργανική ουσία που καλύπτει σχεδόν από άκρη σε άκρη το εσωτερικό του Μπόινγκ δημιουργούν μεγάλα ερωτηματικά. Απ’ ό,τι φαίνεται, όμως, ένας ηλικιωμένος έμπορος, άλλοτε καθηγητής λογοτεχνίας και λαογραφίας της Ανατολικής Ευρώπης, ο Αβραάμ Σετρακιάν, έχει τις απαντήσεις, αν και η ιστορία με τα βαμπίρ που διηγείται ακούγεται αρχικά εξωπραγματική…
