Πρόκειται για ένα αστυνομικό δράμα που λαμβάνει μέρος 35 χρόνια στο μέλλον (το έτος 2048), όπου οι αστυνομικοί συνεργάζονται με ιδιαίτερα εξελιγμένα ανθρώπινα ανδροειδή. Ο Τζον Κένεξ (Karl Urban) είναι ένας αστυνομικός, ο οποίος επέζησε από μια καταστροφική επίθεση. Αφού ξυπνάει μετά από κώμα 17 μηνών, δε θυμάται πολλά πράγματα, εκτός από το ότι ο συνεργάτης του σκοτώθηκε. Ο Τζον Κένεξ κατά την επίθεση έχασε ένα από τα πόδια του και πλέον του το έχουν αντικαταστήσει μ' ένα εξελιγμένο συνθετικό εξάρτημα. Πάσχοντας από κατάθλιψη, ψυχική ατροφία, ιδεοψυχαναγκαστική διαταραχή, μετατραυματικό άγχος και απορρίπτοντας ψυχολογικά το συνθετικό μέρος του σώματός του, ο Τζον επιστρέφει στην ενεργό δράση, κατ' εντολή της συμμάχου του, Σάντρα Μαλντονάντο (Lili Taylor). Κατόπιν εντολής, κάθε αστυνομικός πρέπει να συνεργαστεί με ένα ρομπότ. Έτσι, ο τεχνικός Ρούντι Λομ (Mackenzie Crook) παρουσιάζει στον Τζον τον Ντόριαν (Michael Ealy), ένα ανδροειδές με απρόσμενες συναισθηματικές αντιδράσεις. Ο Τζον έρχεται πιο κοντά στον Ντόριαν λόγω αυτών των συναισθηματικών αντιδράσεων, παρ' όλο που θεωρούνται «αδυναμίες». Εξάλλου, ο ίδιος ο Τζον έχει ένα συνθετικό εξάρτημα να αντικαθιστά το πόδι του, και ένας μέρος του Ντόριαν θεωρείται ανθρώπινο.
