Αγγλία, 1880. Ο Χάρι στα μάτια των τεσσάρων παιδικών του φίλων, μοιάζει να τα έχει όλα στη ζωή του: Είναι φέρελπις αξιωματικός του Αγγλικού στρατού, γιος ένδοξου στρατηγού και πάνω από όλα ερωτευμένος και αρραβωνιασμένος με την πιο όμορφη κοπέλα!Η εικόνα του αυτή όμως, καταρρέει όταν αρνείται να ακολουθήσει το τάγμα του σε μια μάχη, στην πρώτη γραμμή, στο Σουδάν και? παραιτείται! Από εκείνη τη στιγμή, χάνει τα πάντα, εκτός από τέσσερα λευκά φτερά, που του δίνουν οι φίλοι σε ένδειξη ντροπής για τη δειλία του!
