Η σειρα ακολουθει τις περιπετειες του Ragnar Lothbrok, τον μεγαλυτερο ηρωα της εποχης του. Η σειρα αφηγειται το επος της ομαδας του Ragnar, απο Βικινγκς και των οικογενειων τους, καθως ο ιδιος οδευει για να γινει βασιλιας της φυλης των Βικινγκς. Εκτος του οτι ειναι ενας ατρομητος πολεμιστής, ο Ragnar ενσαρκωνει τις παραδοσεις των Νορβηγων, με την αφοσιωση στους θεους. Ο θρυλος λεει οτι ηταν ενας αμεσος απογονος του Odin, ο θεος του πολεμου και των πολεμιστων. Μια σειρα γεματη με συγκρουσεις, εχθροπραξιες βια και αιματοχυσια, το Vikings απεικονιζει τον κοσμο εκεινης της εποχης, τους επιδρομεις, τους εμπορους και τους εξερευνητες, μεσα απο τα ματια της κοινωνιας των Βικινγκς.
