Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1860 και ενώ η Αμερική υπέφερε από τον εμφύλιο πόλεμο, στη Νέα Υόρκη μια άλλη μάχη μαινόταν. Στο κέντρο αυτών των αναταραχών εκτυλίσσεται η ιστορία του νεαρού ?μστερνταμ Βάλον, γιου του αρχηγού των Ιρλανδών μεταναστών που βγαίνοντας από το ορφανοτροφείο αναζητά εκδίκηση για το θάνατο του πατέρα του από τον Μπιλ το ?Χασάπη??Ο Μάρτιν Σκορσέζε χτίζει μια αριστουργηματική τοιχογραφία του αμερικανικού έθνους και βυθίζεται σ? αυτό που ξέρει καλύτερα, τη σκοτεινή πλευρά της Νέας Υόρκης, γυρίζοντας τα γνώριμα μονοπάτια 150 χρόνια πίσω και με πρωταγωνιστές τους διασημότερους ηθοποιούς της εποχής μας.
