Ένας πράκτορας των μυστικών υπηρεσιών (Kevin Costner), με βεβαρυμμένο ιστορικό, μαθαίνει πως πάσχει από θανατηφόρα ασθένεια και πως του μένει λίγος χρόνος ζωής. Υπό το πρίσμα αυτής της είδησης αποφασίζει να αφήσει τις επαγγελματικές του υποχρεώσεις ώστε να αφιερωθεί στην προσπάθειά του να επανασυνδεθεί με την οικογένειά του, και κυρίως με την κόρη του (Hailee Steinfeld). Για πολλά χρόνια άλλωστε συνειδητά κρατούσε τους δικούς του σε απόσταση, για να μην τους θέσει σε κίνδυνο. Ο πράκτορας Ethan Runner θα βρεθεί μπροστά σε ένα δίλημμα, όταν η υπηρεσία του θα του προτείνει να αναλάβει μια τελευταία αποστολή με αντάλλαγμα πρόσβαση σε ένα πειραματικό φάρμακο που ίσως τον σώσει.
